Makkah Emir launches major new community project

The Dhaheyet Somu project on the Makkah-Jeddah Old Highway was launched officially on Saturday by Makkah Emir Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, reported Saudi Gazette.

Bawabat Makkah Company, an offshoot of Al-Balad Al-Ameen Company, owned by Makkah Mayoralty, has commenced working on the investment project in the western district of Makkah. The total value of the project has not been disclosed.

“The project seeks to expedite development in the western sector. It will be co-implemented by the public and private sectors in line with a well-studied design which will provide comprehensive urban solutions. Residential units, parks, mosques, educational as well as health and entertainment institutions and facilities will be constructed,” said Al-Faisal.

The total area of the project is 850ha, and it is 31km away from the Grand Mosque. It stretches from the Makkah-Jeddah Old Highway up to Leith Road south and the 5th Ring Road (Al-Shumaisi Road) North, with 80% of the total area within the Haram boundaries.

Bawabat Makkah aims to turn the area between Makkah Gate and the holy city into a residential area with 40 districts, according to a 15-year development plan.
