Export centre boost for Bahraini firms

MANAMA: The Export Development Centre project will boost the economic sector and give products of Bahraini companies more exposure in global markets, it was revealed at a key meeting yesterday.

Industry and Commerce Minister Dr Hassan Fakhro chaired the 16th Main Joint Economic Committee meeting between the ministry and the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) in the presence of its chairman Dr Essam Fakhro and officials from both sides.

Dr Fakhro stressed that the ministry was keen to maintain unity in the BCCI and avoid infighting in one of the oldest institutions in the kingdom.

They reviewed a number of common issues, including commercial agencies and regulations, which would help traders.

The establishment of a new company for exhibitions and conferences was also discussed.

The minister highlighted the importance of the exhibitions and conferences sector in the kingdom, especially the facilities and promotional programmes of the government and the ministry to attract investors and major events to Bahrain.

Challenges facing salons and ways to organise the sector were studied.

The practice of establishing salons at home without a permit from authorities was probed.

The committee reviewed the industrial sector committee’s proposal to establish a vertical industrial zone to provide more space in industrial areas and accommodate more industrialists.

It also presented a proposal to change the wording of gold and jewellery establishments in the commercial registration from “workshop” to “factory”.

The committee also reviewed several proposals related to the Bahrain Asian Traders with respect to investment companies, percentage of ownership and nature of activities.
